Are recruiting showcases worth it for a U.S. scholarship?
Updated: October 31, 2026
A showcase can help if a specific coach will be there to watch you, but it is not required and it does not guarantee a scholarship. Coaches usually evaluate by video today, so understand what you are buying before you pay.
What a showcase is
An event where athletes play or train to be seen by college coaches. Some are run by agencies, clubs or companies, and each one charges differently and has a different reach.
When it can help
When an interested coach tells you they will attend, when the event lets you play against a level you do not have nearby, or when you want to meet in person a program you already like.
When to think twice
If nobody confirms that a coach at your level and position will attend, if they promise "many coaches will see you" without naming any, or if the cost is high compared with what you can do for free with a good video and direct emails.
What to ask before registering
1. Which universities and coaches will attend, and can I see it in writing? 2. Is it for my sport, position and level? 3. What is the total cost, including travel and lodging? 4. What happens if no interested coach shows up? 5. How is my information sent to coaches afterward?
Free or cheap alternatives
A good highlight video, a list of programs that fit your profile and personalized emails to coaches using this guide. Many coaches prefer that the athlete writes first.
Frequently asked questions
Do I have to attend a showcase to get a U.S. scholarship?
No. You can reach coaches directly with a video and personalized emails.
Do showcases guarantee a scholarship?
No. No scholarship is guaranteed; it depends on level, grades, openings and each coach's decision.
How do I know real coaches attend?
Ask for the list of confirmed universities and coaches in writing and, if you can, email those coaches directly to confirm they will attend.
Does a showcase replace the video?
No. Even if you attend, coaches usually ask for a video to evaluate you, so building one is still a priority.
