Field hockey scholarships in the U.S. for international players
Updated: October 31, 2026
College field hockey in the U.S. is played in the NCAA, with more than 280 programs, and not in the NAIA or the NJCAA. That makes it a sport with few spots, so start early with a well-built list.
1. Where it is played
College field hockey is an NCAA sport (Divisions I, II and III). The NAIA and the NJCAA do not sponsor it; at many of those schools it exists only as a club. There are about 280 NCAA programs, concentrated in the Northeast, the Mid-Atlantic, the Southeast and the Midwest, and very few in California.
2. How many scholarships there are
In Division II the limit is 6.3 scholarship equivalencies per team. Division III gives no athletic scholarships: aid is academic or need-based. In Division I, since 2025-26 and the House v. NCAA settlement, the scholarship cap was replaced by a roster limit of 27 players and each university decides how much to offer. With few spots, many players combine athletic aid with academic aid. Always confirm the rules with each university.
3. Solve eligibility
NCAA D1 and D2 require registration with the Eligibility Center. See the eligibility guide.
4. Positions and what coaches look for
Coaches look for goalkeepers, defenders, midfielders and forwards with good stick skills, game reading and fitness. If you come from a country with a field hockey tradition, your competitive level is an advantage: show it through your club, national team or the tournaments you have played.
5. Build your video
A short video with your best plays, your position clearly identified and your number and jersey visible. Add a full game as a separate link. Follow the video guide.
6. Email the coaches
Smartrecruit lists 284 NCAA field hockey programs. Division I coaches may only contact you starting June 15 after your sophomore year of high school, but you can show your interest earlier. Send a short email in English with your details and video, and follow up after 10 to 14 days. Follow the email guide.
