Men's volleyball scholarships in the U.S. for international players
Updated: October 31, 2026
College men's volleyball has far fewer programs than women's, but scholarships can be split into portions and coaches do recruit international players. With few spots, the key is a well-built list and direct emails.
1. Few programs, a lot of competition per spot
College men's volleyball is played in the NCAA (Divisions I, II and III) and other leagues, but there are far fewer programs than in women's volleyball. Many are in California, the Northeast and the Midwest. With fewer spots, write to several programs and also look at schools in lower divisions.
2. How scholarships work
Men's volleyball is an "equivalency" sport: the total scholarship value is split among several players in portions. In Division II the limit is 4.5 equivalencies per team. Division III gives no athletic scholarships: aid is academic or need-based. In Division I, since December 2025 and the House v. NCAA settlement, the scholarship cap was replaced by a roster limit of 18 players and each university decides how much to offer. It is common to combine a partial athletic scholarship with academic aid.
3. Eligibility
NCAA D1 and D2 require registration with the Eligibility Center. See the eligibility guide.
4. Positions and what coaches look for
Setter, outside hitter, middle blocker, opposite and libero. Coaches look at height, jump, technique, game reading and competitive level. If you play in top leagues or national teams in your country, put it on your profile.
5. The video
Real matches and full rallies with your position identified: serving, passing, defense, attack and, if you are a setter, your setting. Follow the video guide.
6. Email the coaches
Send a short email in English with your details and video link, and follow up after 10 to 14 days. Follow the email guide. NCAA contact rules limit when a coach may write to you first, but you can show your interest whenever you like.
Always confirm current rules on the official NCAA and NAIA websites: they change often.
